Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber to increase oxygen levels in the blood and tissues. The chamber, which can be a monoplace (single-person tube) or multiplace (room for multiple people), raises air pressure to 2-3 times normal atmospheric levels. This allows the lungs to absorb significantly more oxygen, which is then carried throughout the body to promote healing, fight infections, and reduce inflammation. It’s a well-established therapy used in hospitals and clinics for various conditions.

What Issues Does It Address?

HBOT treats conditions where increased oxygen can aid recovery, including sports injuries, tendon repair, post-surgical healing, concussions, and soft tissue injury recovery. It also helps with crushing injuries and burn injuries, and enhances wound healing by stimulating new blood vessel growth and supporting the immune system.

What to Expect During Treatment

A typical session lasts 1 hour. You’ll change into provided clothing and lie comfortably inside the clear chamber (monoplace) or sit in a multiplace chamber wearing a cannula for oxygen delivery. As pressure builds, you may feel ear popping (like on an airplane) and can equalize by swallowing or yawning. The environment is quiet and controlled, with monitoring by staff—you can watch TV, listen to music, or relax.

After the session, the team checks your vital signs, and you might feel slightly tired or hungry but can resume normal activities. Treatment courses vary (e.g., 6-8 sessions for tendon injury repair), with benefits like improved healing accumulating over time. Side effects are uncommon but may include temporary ear pressure or sinus discomfort.
